Chipiona Carnival 2026: Complete Guide to the Festivities
If there is one celebration that Chipiona looks forward to more than any other, it is Carnival. Declared a Festival of Tourist Interest in Andalusia and considered the second most important carnival in the province of Cádiz, Chipiona's Carnival combines the essence of the Cádiz carnival tradition with its own open and deeply popular character.
And just 10 minutes by car from Costa Ballena, it is one of the most authentic experiences you can have on the Costa de la Luz in winter.
Dates of the Chipiona Carnival 2026
The Chipiona Carnival 2026 runs from 7 to 22 February, although the activity begins much earlier: from January, the carnival peñas (social clubs) open their doors with performances, popular food events and pre-fiesta atmosphere.
The key dates of the official programme are:
- 7 February: Carnival Pregón (opening speech) and Coronation of the Piconera Mayor at Plaza de Andalucía (8pm), followed by a Masquerade Ball
- 16–18 February: Popurrí Competition at the Noches de Pío XII, featuring top-flight groups including Antonio Martínez Ares's comparsa and Álex Pérez "El Peluca"'s chirigota
- 21 February: La Gran Mascotá (12:30pm) and the Solidarity Jamoná
- 22 February: Grand Carnival Parade (2:30pm from Avenida de Sevilla) and Closing Champagne Celebration (10pm at Plaza Pío XII)
- 23 February: Local public holiday
What Is the Chipiona Carnival?
The Chipiona Carnival is, by its own right, the town's most beloved celebration. It was revived in 1984, led by carnival author Manuel Camacho Francés "El Chusco", and has grown ever since into one of the province's major carnival events.
The official 2026 poster, titled "Reflejo de una ilusión" ("Reflection of an Illusion"), was created by local Chipiona artist Francisco Manuel Borrego Olave. The opening pregón is delivered by journalist Manuel Martínez Piñero.
What makes it special is its blend of Cádiz tradition and its own local identity: chirigotas (satirical singing groups), comparsas (lyrical choral groups) and coros that in many cases also compete at the Gran Teatro Falla in Cádiz, but who regard Chipiona as their true festive home.
The Grand Parade: the Most Awaited Moment
The Grand Parade on 22 February is the highlight of the entire carnival. Recognised by the Cádiz Provincial Council as the finest carnival event held outside the capital, it is a spectacular display of light, colour and music that runs down Avenida de Sevilla and ends at Plaza Pío XII with the prize-giving ceremony.
Thousands of people line the streets to watch the groups parade past in their costumes, singing their coplas. If you can only go for one day, make it this one.
The Carnival Peñas: Popular Gastronomy
One of the most distinctive features of the Chipiona Carnival is its gastronomic character. Weeks before the official festivities begin, the town's carnival peñas (clubs) open their doors and offer guests traditional local dishes — free of charge or at very low prices.
Throughout the carnival period, you can enjoy a Sardiná (sardine grill), a Gambá (prawn feast), a Gran Pavía (fried battered fish), Pringá (slow-cooked meat stew), Poleá con Coscorrones (a traditional sweet porridge with croutons), mixed rice paellas, and the XXXIX edition of the famous Concurso al Mejor Piropo a Chipiona (Best Compliment to Chipiona competition).
Popular gastronomy at its finest, with the warm atmosphere of the peñas as the backdrop.
How to Enjoy It from Costa Ballena
Chipiona is just 10 minutes by car from Costa Ballena. The carnival takes place mainly in the town's historic centre — Plaza de Andalucía, Plaza Pío XII, Calle Padre Lerchundi and Avenida de Sevilla — all within easy walking distance of each other once you arrive.
The most practical approach is to park on the outskirts of the historic centre and explore on foot. The Chipiona Carnival is family-friendly and accessible: it doesn't have the sheer scale and crowds of the Cádiz capital carnival, which makes it ideal if you're travelling with children or prefer a more intimate atmosphere.
Tip: For the Grand Parade on the 22nd, arrive at least an hour early to secure a good spot along Avenida de Sevilla.
