Rota Urta Fish Festival 2026: Cádiz's Most Iconic Dish

In the gastronomy of Cádiz, there is one dish that transcends recipe and becomes identity: urta a la roteña. A fish stew born in Rota, with which the town's cooks have fed generations and which has conquered tables across Spain. Every summer, Rota pays tribute to this dish — and to the fish that stars in it — with the Fiesta de la Urta: a free, popular and completely authentic celebration.

From Costa Ballena, Rota is just 15 minutes by car. A perfect summer afternoon.

What Is Urta?

Urta (Pagrus auriga) is a fish from the sea bream family that lives on the rocky Atlantic and western Mediterranean seabed. With firm, white flesh and an intense flavour, urta is one of the most prized fish in Cádiz cuisine — and Rota is the town that has historically made it famous.

The traditional recipe for urta a la roteña cooks the whole fish in a clay pot on a bed of tomato, red and green pepper, onion, garlic and Jerez fino wine. The result is a deeply flavoured, perfectly balanced stew that has made this fish synonymous with the best of Rota's food culture. Many leading Spanish chefs regard urta a la roteña as one of the most accomplished fish dishes in Spanish gastronomy.

The Festival: When and Where

The Fiesta de la Urta takes place on 30 July 2026 on Rota's seafront promenade and in the historic centre. It is a free event open to everyone, organised by Rota Town Hall in collaboration with the Fishermen's Guild and local restaurateurs.

The usual programme includes:

  • Popular urta a la roteña tasting for all attendees (free or at a nominal price)
  • Recipe competition between local restaurants and cooks, with a jury and prize-giving ceremony
  • Exhibition and sale of fresh urta by the Rota Fishermen's Guild
  • Cultural activities and entertainment on the seafront promenade
  • Live cooking demonstration of the traditional dish

The Best Restaurants to Try It

Beyond the festival, urta a la roteña is available in Rota's restaurants throughout the summer season. Some of the go-to establishments:

El Embarcadero (Paseo Marítimo): One of Rota's classic fish restaurants, with views over the bay and a menu centred on local produce.

El Pescador: A traditional restaurant in the historic centre, known for its faithful version of the original recipe with tomato and fino wine.

Bar El Náutico: A chiringuito with decades of history where the urta arrives directly from the fish market, cooked simply and without unnecessary embellishment.

In all cases, the best guarantee is to ask whether that day's urta is fresh from the fish market. The high season for urta coincides with summer, when the fish is at its very best.

Rota in Summer: Beyond the Festival

The Urta Festival falls in the heart of the Rota summer. Make the most of your visit by also enjoying:

  • Rota's beaches: Playa de la Costilla and Playa de la Ballena (which connects with Costa Ballena) are two of the finest in the area, with calm water and plenty of space.
  • The historic old town: The medieval walls, the Castle of Luna and the Barrio de las Flores are perfect for an afternoon stroll.
  • The covered market: There is always fresh urta at the fish stall. Highly recommended if you have a kitchen in your accommodation.

Getting There from Costa Ballena

Rota is 15 minutes by car from Costa Ballena via the A-491. In summer, parking in the town centre can be difficult; the most practical approach is to leave the car in the outer areas and walk or cycle in. The distance from the outer car parks to the seafront promenade is about 10–15 minutes on foot.
