Chipiona Feast of Our Lady of Regla 2026: The Town's Most Heartfelt Celebration

There is one date in Chipiona's calendar that is more than just a celebration: it is a moment of collective identity. On 8 September, the feast day of Nuestra Señora de Regla, the whole town comes together to honour its patron saint in festivities that combine the deepest devotion with the joy of popular celebration.

From Costa Ballena, Chipiona is just 10 minutes by car — one of the most authentic and moving celebrations on the Costa de la Luz.

Dates of the 2026 Patronal Festival

The Patronal Festival of Nuestra Señora de Regla is celebrated on 8 September 2026, the feast of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary and the great day of Chipiona's patron saint. The events extend over several days before and after this date, with the Novena in honour of the Virgin in the days leading up to the feast and a festive programme that includes open-air dances, performances and fireworks.

The Virgin of Regla: Patron of Chipiona and of Sailors

The Virgin of Regla is far more than Chipiona's patron saint: she is the patron of the seafaring people of the entire Atlantic Cádiz coast. Her image, preserved in the Sanctuary of Nuestra Señora de Regla since the 14th century, is one of the oldest and most venerated Marian devotions in southern Spain.

The history of the Sanctuary is intertwined with the history of Chipiona itself. According to tradition, the image was brought from Carthage in the 4th century by Saint Augustine and hidden by the Augustinians during the Arab invasion. Recovered centuries later, the Sanctuary that houses the Virgin today dates from the 15th century and is one of the most important historic and artistic monuments in the province of Cádiz. It holds thousands of votive offerings left by sailors and fishermen in gratitude for having their lives spared.

The Sanctuary of Nuestra Señora de Regla: An Essential Visit

The Sanctuary of Nuestra Señora de Regla is one of the places that should be on every itinerary in Chipiona, regardless of when you visit. Managed by the Augustinian Fathers, the complex includes the basilica with the image of the Virgin, a cloister of great artistic value and the votive offerings museum — where centuries of maritime faith have accumulated.

The basilica is particularly beautiful when the light enters through its windows. The image of the Virgin, a late Gothic carving, presides over the high altar with a serenity that explains why centuries of devotion have done nothing to diminish her power.

The Festival Programme

The central events of the Patronal Festival include:

The Novena: Nine days of solemn mass in the basilica before the feast day, with sermons by invited preachers and mass participation from local residents and pilgrims arriving from across the coast.

The Solemn Mass on 8 September: The central religious act, with the participation of local and provincial authorities, the Brotherhood of Our Lady of Carmen and the town's fishing community.

The Procession: The image of the Virgin of Regla is carried in procession through the streets of Chipiona's historic centre, escorted by the Brotherhood, fishermen bearing their banners and hundreds of devotees. The route ends back at the Sanctuary.

Open-Air Dances and Performances: The festival days include musical acts, open-air dancing in the town's squares and the traditional fireworks display over the sea — one of the most anticipated moments of the entire year for the people of Chipiona.

Chipiona in September: the Best End to Summer

The Feast of Regla falls at a very special time of year in Chipiona: summer is beginning to wind down, temperatures are ideal (25–30°C), the sea is still perfect for swimming and the August crowds have gone. For many people, it is simply the best time of year to visit.

The beaches, the lighthouse, the moscatel bodegas and the historic centre can all be enjoyed in much greater comfort than in peak August. And the atmosphere of a patronal festival has an authenticity that the more tourist-oriented summer events don't always have.
